Digitalization Is No Longer About Technology – It Is About Competitiveness

When discussing digital transformation, many SMEs still associate digitalization primarily with purchasing new software, installing sensors, or investing in advanced machinery. While technology is certainly an important enabler, successful digitalization is increasingly becoming a strategic business issue rather than a purely technical one.

Across Europe, manufacturing SMEs face growing challenges related to rising energy costs, labour shortages, increasing customer expectations, and stronger sustainability requirements. In this environment, companies that can collect, understand, and use data effectively gain a significant competitive advantage. Digitalization provides the tools to make faster decisions, optimize production processes, reduce waste, improve energy efficiency, and increase overall business resilience.

However, digital transformation does not always require large investments. Many successful digitalization journeys begin with simple steps such as monitoring machine performance, measuring energy consumption, digitizing paper-based processes, or introducing basic data analytics. These initiatives often provide valuable insights that help companies identify inefficiencies and prioritize future investments.

One of the most important lessons from the Danube DNA project is that SMEs benefit most when digitalization is approached gradually and strategically. Technologies such as Industrial IoT, data analytics, artificial intelligence, and cloud-based solutions can generate significant value when they address clearly identified business needs. The goal should not be technology adoption for its own sake, but rather measurable improvements in productivity, sustainability, and competitiveness.

At the same time, collaboration remains essential. SMEs do not have to navigate digital transformation alone. Networks, innovation hubs, technology providers, research institutions, and business support organizations can provide expertise, guidance, and access to tested solutions. Sharing experiences and learning from successful examples can significantly reduce risks and accelerate implementation.

What has been your organization's biggest challenge or success story in digital transformation? Which technologies or approaches have delivered the greatest value for your business? We invite experts and practitioners across the Danube Region to share their experiences and insights.
