Description of center’s mission and objectives

The SMART FACTORY DEMO CENTER is used for different activities: Pedagogical work (education of students in the field of production engineering) Development/research work in key areas covered by the laboratory (smart factory concepts and architectures, distributed systems, edge computing and 5G technology, digitalization of production systems and processes (digtal twins, digital agents), smart warehousing and AGV, AMR logistics). Education, development/research work, workshops and trainings for companies (test before invest, demonstration of key technologies, skills and competences gain). It is developed and built according to the principles of Industry 4.0 (I 4.0) and provides the possibilities for basic and applied research of all key I4.0 technologies.

Description of center’s facilities and equipment

A reconfigurable modular production line with internal AGV and AMR logistics (DC2 - Demo Center 2) features a flexible (agile) production setup, constructed from various production modules with the capability for fast and easy reconfiguration in a plug-and-produce, self-recognition manner. There are 8 different production modules used for assembly, handling operations, warehousing, quality control, and material tracking. Each module represents a production system with an integrated local digital twin, EDGE technology, and connectivity. The modules are interconnected based on their inputs and outputs (input factors: energy, data, resources, material, and technological limitations; output factors: products/semi-finished products, data, assets, and waste). The connected modules form a production process controlled by both local and global digital twins (global orchestration and local edge computing). As a result of different production layouts and varying sequences of production modules, the different material and information flows can be analyzed in detail.

"More than 20 production modules (6 different types) are used to form different production layouts for different processes (based on different products and production plan): Module 1: Detection and sorting of coloured pieces on the conveyor belt, equipment provided: mini robot Dobot, optical sensor. Module 2: DOBOT C3 collaborative robot, equipment provided: robot attachment to a small table, DOBOT C3. Module 3: Robotic component warehouse, equipment provided: 1x rail, 1x small robot, 1x colour sensor, cubes of different colours. Module 4: Machine vision system for colour perception and piece orientation. Module 5: Robotic cell for assembly, robotic vision. Module 6: Robotic cell for laser engraving. Module 7: AGV – Automatic guided vehicles used for internal logistics between modular production stations. Module 8: AMR - Autonomous Mobile Robot used for internal logistics between modular production stations. Other Supporting infrastructure and software tools: -Machine vision system for automatic recognition of production modules in the production layout (6 roof cameras). -Siemens Plant Simulation used for digital twin of production processes (changes and anomaly recognition, self-reconfigurable capabilities according to the changes in real production – no expert needed to build and set-up a new model). -ThingsBoard tool for process visualization and monitoring."
