Challenge

MDC needed better visibility of how major energy-consuming assets and selected process signals contributed to operational performance and energy-related costs. In a more diverse industrial environment, the lack of structured real-time monitoring made it difficult to analyse equipment load, compare processes and identify optimisation opportunities. MDC therefore provided an important second context in which the WeldWise architecture could be applied beyond the original spot-welding development case.

Solution & Result

At MDC, WeldWise was piloted as a broader industrial application of the already developed core solution logic. The pilot was configured around a local Raspberry Pi-based server and integrated with monitoring components for a powder coating oven with consumption around 100 kW, an industrial compressor with consumption around 22 kW and a laser cutting process with consumption around 27 kW. In addition, the setup included monitoring of three discrete signals from the laser cutting process. This pilot demonstrated that the WeldWise architecture can be adapted beyond spot-welding applications and used for wider industrial energy-monitoring and operational-analysis scenarios. The collected data supported monitoring of electricity consumption profiles, process activity and future cost and utilisation analysis, confirming the transferability of the solution to a more diverse industrial environment.
B2GreenHub note: MDC should be presented as the pilot application and transfer case, showing how WeldWise was adapted from its original development context to a broader industrial environment.

Learning Tips & Recommendations

When transferring a solution from one industrial context to another, it is important to preserve the core monitoring logic while adapting the measurement points, signals and KPIs to the new environment. The MDC case showed that modular architecture is essential for this type of transfer. It is also important to select representative assets and define clearly what kind of operational insight is expected from the pilot. A successful pilot is not only about technical installation, but about making the data usable for management, cost analysis and future optimisation decisions.
